Wig talk, made simple.

New to wigs? Here's what all those terms mean, from closures and frontals to knotless braids and color numbers, so you can shop with confidence.

Monif

Lace & hairline

HD lace
An ultra-thin, sheer lace that blends into most skin tones, so the hairline looks like it's growing from your scalp. Every Luxe wig is made on HD lace.
Lace front
A wig with lace only along the front hairline. The rest of the wig is a regular cap.
Frontal
A strip of lace that runs from ear to ear across the front of the wig, so you can part your hair anywhere along the front and wear it swept back.
Closure
A square of lace at the top of the wig where you part your hair. A 7x7 closure gives you a 7 by 7 inch area for parting.
Full lace
The entire cap is made of lace, so you can part anywhere and style more freely, including higher updos on many styles.
Bleached knots
The tiny knots where hair is tied to the lace are lightened so they disappear against your scalp for a more natural look.
The melt
When the lace blends so seamlessly into your skin that you can't tell where the wig begins.

Fit & wear

Cap size
The measurement around your head, from your hairline above your ears to the nape of your neck. Luxe caps come in Small (21 inch), Medium (22 inch) and Large (23 inch).
Adjustable band
An elastic band at the back of the wig that you can tighten or loosen for a snug, comfortable fit.
Combs
Small clips sewn inside the cap that grip your hair or wig cap to keep the wig secure.
Glueless
Wearing your wig without adhesive, using the band and combs instead. Most Luxe styles can be worn glueless; a few may need a stylist's customization.
Install
Putting on and securing your wig, including laying the lace so it blends with your skin. We recommend having your first install done by a professional.
Wig cap or wig grip
A thin cap or band worn under your wig to keep your own hair flat and the wig in place.

Braid & curl styles

Box braids
Classic braids divided into neat, square sections.
Knotless braids
Braids that start flat and flush at the base, without a bulky knot, for a lighter, more natural look.
Micro, extra small & medium
The thickness of the braids. Micro braids are the finest; medium braids are fuller and bolder.
Boho braids
Also called bohemian or goddess braids: braids with loose curly pieces throughout for a soft, romantic look.
Human hair curls
Curly pieces made from real human hair. They feel softer, move more naturally and can be refreshed with water and a little product.
Cornrows
Braids woven flat against the scalp in rows, often flowing into longer braids.
French curls
Braids finished with bouncy, wavy curled ends.
Passion twists
Fluffy, springy two-strand twists with a soft, bohemian texture.
Island twists
Long, defined twists with a polished finish, often paired with curly pieces.
Distressed locs
Faux locs with a textured, slightly undone finish for a natural, lived-in look.
Extension fiber
Premium braiding hair used for the braids themselves. It's lightweight and holds its style beautifully.
